What to Focus on For Sustainable Health

Three Core Areas to Focus On to Change Your Health for the Better

Do You Struggle?

We all struggle with our health from time to time. Perhaps we’ve been distracted by life or work, and before we know it, we’ve piled on a few too many pounds and feel uncomfortable in our own skin.

That’s when it can be tempting to listen to some promise of a quick fix, but no matter how seductive these siren calls are, they don’t work. They usually fail because we’re spread so thin and struggling with self-sabotage.

Instead, we need to accept that all-or-nothing efforts are unsustainable and that it’s better to approach it through the power of small consistent changes. When we do that, it becomes a more palatable and sustainable process that allows us get on with to enjoying our lives.

What to Focus on?

So how do we do this? Once we stop thinking of things as a quick fix, we can explore three core areas:

·       Our food and activity environments: Are these contributing to our health and supporting our habits or actively working against them?

·       Our day-to-day environments: Context and environment play a massive part in our habitual behaviour. This covers everything from what we see on social networking sites to the treats we have in our kitchen cupboards.

·       Our inner narratives: What are the stories and scripts we have about ourselves and the world around us, and how do they serve and undermine us?

Check out Episode 51 of the Restless MidLifer Podcast where I dive into how to more sustainably improve our health, lose weight and increase our sense of confidence in our own skin.

Do this:

In the meantime, I have an activity for you. Take some time to reflect on what you’ve undertaken in the past in terms of your habits and your attempts to change. What worked and what didn’t? What did you enjoy, even if you lapsed? What sorts of approaches or activities could be tweaked and re-introduced to form a future, habitual change?

What Next?

We’ll talk some more about that in the future.
